Expo: ‘Verweile doch! du bist so schön!’

I carry out my work with the hope of bringing the traditional Japanese art of calligraphy into the future and to the world.

Naoshima is an art destination attracting international attention, and within it, ‘Roka’—a venue that takes great care to provide a space of exceptional quality—is precisely the place where this vision can be realised. I am truly delighted and deeply grateful.

Whilst preparing the works for this exhibition, I had the opportunity to perform in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8.

Calligraphy and choral singing. For me, they are inextricably linked: my understanding of song deepens as I create calligraphy, and my understanding of calligraphy deepens as I engage with song.

The text for the second movement of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony is taken from the final part of Goethe’s ‘Faust’.

There were passages that were difficult to grasp, so I began by revisiting ‘Faust’.

And when I finally found a translation that felt right to me, a philosophy emerged that was almost Buddhist in nature. Whilst my understanding of Buddhism itself is still limited, the message that resonated with me at this moment was this:

To live is to savour this very moment to the full.

This coincided with a theme I have been exploring recently.

To create works that bear witness to the ‘here and now’ of the guests spending time at Roka.

It was with this in mind that I was guided by my brush to create these pieces.

Returning to the origins of calligraphy, I have mounted these character-based works as hanging scrolls.

Calligraphy that captures the spirit of the 21st century. Please take a moment to appreciate this tradition that looks towards the future.

日本の伝統美術である書を未来へ、世界へ

という思いを胸に活動しています。

国際的に注目されているアートスポット直島、その中でもこだわりを持ち上質な空間を提供している「ろ霞」は、まさにそれを実現できる場所。嬉しく、ありがたい限りです。

今回の展示作品の準備中にマーラーの交響曲第8番への出演がありました。

書と合唱。書作の中で歌への理解が深まったり、歌と向き合う中で書の理解が深まったり、私にとっては切っても切れない関係にあります。

マーラーの8番第2部の詩はゲーテ「ファウスト」の最終部分。理解が難しい箇所があり、ファウストのおさらいからしました。そして、ようやく自分なりにしっくりくる訳がみつかった時、そこにはまるで仏教のような思想が現れました。仏教自体の理解もまだまだですが、今の私に聞えてきたメッセージは

今この瞬間を精一杯味わうことが生きること。

最近の自分自身のテーマとも重なりました。

ろ霞で過ごすお客様の今この瞬間に立ち会う作品を作る。

そう考えた時、筆に導かれてできたのが今回の作品たちです。

書の原点に立ち返り、文字作品を掛け軸にしました。
